On May 26, 2009, the California Supreme Court upheld Proposition 8, a voter-approved constitutional amendment defining marriage as between one man and one woman. The ruling preserved approximately 18,000 same-sex marriages performed prior to the measure taking effect while barring additional such unions. The decision followed the court's earlier legalization of same-sex marriage and preceded later federal court action.
